Enquanto escrevo este post, meu braço direito está um pouco ardido. Bati, ralei, tomei um capote de bike? Poderia ter sido. Mas dizer que se se trata de uma homenagem ao piloto que levo como exemplo de vida, tanto pela atitude como pela velocidade – Sir Jackie Stewart – é um pouco mais chique. Vocês conhecem a faixa do capacete dele? Bem, está virando uma tatuagem.
Este sou eu. De corpo e alma entregue ao universo do automóvel – preferencialmente aos apimentados. O típico piloto frustrado, com algum talento para a escrita, uma certa dose de conhecimento técnico e muita vontade de colocar o leitor no cockpit a cada texto que escrevo. E esta é a minha história. Bem, marromenos isso.
Minha primeira palavra foi “carro”. Meus pais adoram fazer piada com isso, e para o meu bel embaraço, sempre repetem a história para familiares, amigos, namoradas e afins. Hoje, vejo que é provável que esta será a minha última palavra, também.
Ham, o que mais? Sempre tirei boas notas em redação. Minha primeira nota vermelha – que rendeu um literal tapa na cara – foi em música, na 2ª série do primário. Ironia do destino: quase fui músico profissional, uma década depois. Ironia II: Até decidir trabalhar com jornalismo automotivo, nunca gostei de física. Hoje, é uma ferramenta que compreendo até certo ponto, e gosto bastante. Me formei em História, na USP. E decidi trabalhar com automóveis no meio do curso. Cara, que zona. Sou praticamente uma colcha de retalhos.
É confuso, mas tem uma explicação simples: sempre fiz aquilo que quis fazer.
Meu pai sempre foi um entusiasta por carros. Mas aquele entusiasta mais distante: que admira uma Ferrari ou Porsche, que assistiu Bullitt e Grand Prix dezenas de vezes, e sempre que pode, vai ao GP do Brasil. Mas de alguma forma, eu sempre tive dentro de mim uma veia mais forte: queria ser o cara dentro do Charger que fugia de McQueen. Queria estar ali, freando o McLaren MP4/6 na Curva do Lago, freando tarde, reduzindo marchas, reacelerando. Queria ser Nino Barlini, do Grand Prix, para pilotar uma Ferrari em Mônaco e dar uns amassos na Françoise Hardy.
Confirmada a impossibilidade de investir no pequeno Kowalski como piloto profissional de kart, o automobilismo virou uma espécie de amor de gaveta, alternando com a vontade de ser piloto da aeronáutica (forças G sempre foram o meu vício). Ficou encostado, até esquecido. Corria em karts indoor, quase sempre ganhava, irritava meus amigos em disputas em videogames e simuladores, e tinha uma estranha – mas compreensível – atração pelo aspecto técnico do automobilismo: pilotagem, geometria de suspensão, temperaturas de pneu. Eu tinha uns 15 ou 16 anos. Pensando bem, isso era bem esquisito.
Simuladores me divertem até hoje
E daí, como disse lá em cima, no meio do curso de faculdade decidi resgatar as origens. Num surto. Quando vi que não queria ser professor, nem pesquisador, nem nada que envolvesse profissionalmente a História. Mas estava feliz por tê-la cursado: a forma de estruturação de um texto, argumentação, auto-crítica, tudo é bastante diferente da faculdade de jornalismo. Descobri isso ao fazer todas as minhas optativas externas no curso de jornalismo da ECA, e ao conversar bastante com os professores. A salada deu mais ou menos certo.
Quando saí da faculdade, já estava com uma porção de livros técnicos de automobilismo, um conhecimento razoável, uma câmera fotográfica bacana, e montei um site – o Mulsanne, talvez alguns de vocês se lembrem. Graças a ele, comecei a trabalhar de frila para a revista Super Speed e logo depois, para a Quatro Rodas – um pulo de carreira que me assustou um pouco, no início. Bem no começo de toda essa bagunça, comprei o meu primeiro carro de verdade (um Dodge Charger 1977), conheci muitos profissionais e entusiastas, fiz amizade com alguns, troquei conhecimentos com quase todos.
Na Quatro Rodas, fiquei por quase quatro anos. Comecei no site, mas logo estava na revista. Fiz reportagens de comportamento, notícias, eventos, e desenvolvi minhas capacidades de fotógrafo ao ser assistente do cara que considero simplesmente o tutor da minha carreira: Marco de Bari (autor das fotos que ilustram este post). Com a ajuda do olhar dele evoluí muito (realmente muito), de forma que hoje posso me considerar um fotógrafo profissional.
Dado momento na QR, eu decidi me dedicar somente à parte gráfica. Mas sentia aquela dorzinha de cotovelo por não poder explorar o meu lado automobilista, digamos assim. Eu tinha o meu site, mas queria algo com mais exposição, que usasse meu conhecimento técnico e a experiência adquirida ao dirigir os carros para a revista (foram quase 200 modelos diferentes). Nisso, me ofereci na cara dura ao Jalopnik. Fui aceito de prontidão, e o resto vocês já sabem: aquela enxurrada de matérias bizarras e/ou técnicas, com espaçamento secular entre elas. Vou tentar melhorar estes prazos…
Bem. As coisas se mantiveram neste equilíbrio Jalop+Texto e QR+foto por alguns meses, até que veio a reviravolta. A caminho de uma fotografia, recebi uma ligação que mudaria todo o jogo. Era a revista Car and Driver. Eles precisavam de um editor para a seção inicial da revista (o “0 a 100″), e alguém que também tivesse a mão – e o pé – para testar, avaliar e fazer comparativos com carros. Viram meus posts – adivinhem onde, no Jalopnik – e me convidaram para uma reunião. A única condição intocável que exigi, era que eu continuasse como colaborador do Jalopnik.
De qualquer forma, era uma encruzilhada. A cada mês que passava, estava mais firmado na QR – o sonho de quase todos os jornalistas do meio. Contudo, a tentação de desvendar um universo relativamente novo, em uma revista cujo padrão editorial convergia mais com o meu estilo, se mostrou algo irresistível, em um momento da vida que eu tinha a possibilidade de arriscar tudo. E daí, eu aceitei. Da Quatro Rodas carrego simplesmente toda a base da minha carreira – e claro, o orgulho de ter trabalhado na revista que foi a minha leitura quase diária de infância e adolescência. E criei e mantive alguns excelentes amigos.
Bem. O resultado da mudança de casa, vocês vêem a partir da edição 40 da Car and Driver, que está nas bancas agora. Meu primeiro grande teste foi comparar o Punto T-Jet ao Bravo T-Jet, na pista de testes da TRW, sob chuva – e com direito a colocar as rodas+pneus opcionais do Bravo no Punto. -Update: seu tutor, Marco de Bari, o viciou em Red Bull. O vício continua até hoje. Bem lembrado, Fla3D.
-Já ficou quatro vezes na rua por falta de gasolina. Três vezes, em um Dodge.
-Sempre torceu para Alain Prost, e nunca para o Senna. Mas em quase todas as corridas de 94, o moleque chorava porque não via o cara de capacete amarelo alinhando no grid.
-A primeira vez que passou dos 200 km/h foi de carona em um Audi A8, também em 1994.
-Nunca chegou a 300 km/h, mas já esteve perto: 290 km/h no ponteiro. Infelizmente, não posso revelar o carro exato. Mas possui quatro argolas.
-O primeiro carro “de verdade” que guiou foi um Alfa 164 24V preto, com menos de 10 mil quilômetros e que foi vendido por… cinco mil reais.
-A primeira vez que perdeu o controle de um carro foi a bordo do antigo Charger R/T, rodando em uma curva em descida.
-Nunca bateu o carro, mas quase capotou ao ser atingido pelo carro de um amigo, na lateral. Até hoje, ele se lembra do barulho e da dor no pescoço.
-Come a cada dez dias no McDonald’s. Muitas vezes, dirigindo.
-É apaixonado por V8s americanos, mas não suporta a Nascar.
-Gosta de namorar no carro.
